A REHEARSED READING

It’s in the Fields is a rehearsed reading of a new play by Sam Smithson, directed by Meghan Bartual-Smyth.

A small village in twelfth-century England is shaken by a murder. Tilly, a rebellious young woman, has confessed and claimed sanctuary in the local church. For forty days and forty nights she cannot be touched, but the villagers are demanding swift justice.

Brother Sebastian, the resident monk, is a principled man of faith. When he is told by God that there is more to the story, he begins to question the motives of the people around him. Why was Robert the Brown murdered? What secrets are the villagers keeping? And what truly lies in the fields?

It’s in the Fields explores belief, guilt and the uneasy search for truth in a world where faith, superstition and fear are never far apart.
