A REHEARSED READING
Micheal Ear spends his whole life planning. Hour by hour is carefully schedulded. Life becomes a long ladder stretching far ahead, each rung one of thousands of tiny tasks or activities that he can cling onto for fear of falling.
Elizabeth Ear can’t stop reminiscing. Life plays out in the rear-view mirror of her Volvo, in the drafty rooms of her childhood home, in the worst days of their 28 year marriage.
One morning, Micheal awakes far too early and decides it is time to do something different. He is going to cancel Sunday morning plans and write a play. It’s utter madness; he needs Elizabeth’s help but she is less than impressed after years of feeling shackled to a schedule. Why now?
Everything is at stake. 28 years have lead to this moment; a chance to be truly present after all that time. But the past and the future keep jabbing at their attempted spontaneity, threatening the play and their relationship at every moment.
Play by Ear is about loving and planning and remembering and about the comfort and the pain of all of that.
