Ruth and Zadie celebrate Halloween by wishing they could kill each other.
From the moment horror writer Ruth pursued much-younger former-addict Zadie, she’s had the upper hand; down to the miserly allowance she hands out each week. Ruth obsessively loves the idea of Zadie. But Heaven forbid she has individual wants or needs.
And Zadie can't voice her growing unhappiness. The spark has gone, but she knows Ruth will twist and gaslight and convince her to stay. She needs a different approach. A deadlier one.
It’s 31st October. To inject some ‘theatre’ and impress the guests of their Fifth Annual Halloween ‘Spooktacular’, Zadie has ordered a blood-soaked, screaming clown mannequin from her local fancy dress shop. His name is Diablo.
“He feeds off misery. He drives a wedge. By watching. By learning. By imitating. By predicting.”
With a stolen firearm, fake suicide note, deadly game of apple-bobbing and mahoosive bottle of arsenic also in the mix, the night soon descends into unpredictable and dangerous chaos…
